Searching to find myself
But all I find is you
I can hardly stand myself
So what am I to you?
If you can find a reason
You could let me know
I won't blame you
I'll just turn and go
I'm coming home to you
Every night...
--Every Night, Imagine Dragons
These days, Mariana can barely tell what's left and what's right. Especially what's left, because most days it feels like she's pretty much alone in life. The weight of how crazy everything is sits on her shoulders like a weight she can't drop, but she's learned to keep pushing. More than anything, she remembers that each day she's a tiny bit closer to her dreams.
Mariana actually has a place to call her own now! While climbing up to get a good look at the stars, she discovered a small cave just big enough for a Mako of her size between two flat-topped rocks that made amazing stargazing platforms. Even inside the cave, cracks in the rocks allow for her to easily see the stars. Even better, it's on the coast, and she quite literally only has to walk down the cliff to be greeted by an incredibly deep expanse of ocean. Yes, Mariana still enjoys swimming as deep down as she possibly can, and as she ages, she's able to go even deeper. Every day she pushes herself to go just a tiny bit lower into the darkness beneath the waves. She's also developed an odd love for storms, as they seem to calm her. You might automatically assume that she stays in her cave where it's nice and dry, listening to the rain drumming against the roof, but she actually doesn't. Mariana love to put herself inside of the storm, and often ventures out into the ocean to let the waves drag her along. Her favorite thing to do during a storm is crashing up through the peak of the tallest waves and staring up at the few stars she can see through the thick clouds before being pulled back down with the tremendous force of the wave.
Most importantly, Mariana hasn't spoken a word to her parents since she left at 10 human years of age. She's seen them numerous times in the media, and they seem to be doing just fine without her. It's as if she never even existed, and Mariana doesn't care. …but others do. It seems that anywhere she goes in public, at least one person will recognize her and say "oh, you're that famous couple's daughter, right?". It never ceases to aggravate her, as Mariana just wants to be her own person. There's nothing more that she wants in life other than to live a life with no strings attached.
Over the years, Mariana has also become more and more forgetful. She's only about 20 in human years, but some days you could say she has the memory of a 80-year-old. Thankfully her forgetful streaks are easily cured with a stack of purple post-its that match her fur.
